Frequently asked questions

Here are some of the most common questions we receive at Apikotoa Counselling Service. We hope these answers provide clarity and reassurance as you consider your counselling journey.

How sessions work
All sessions are held via a secure video platform (such as Zoom). You’ll need a stable internet connection and a private space where you feel comfortable. I’ll send you a link before your session and guide you through the process if you’re new to online counselling.

Booking and changes
You can book by emailing me or using the contact form on my website. If you need to reschedule or cancel, please give at least 24 hours’ notice. Missed appointments without notice may incur a fee.

What if I need urgent help?
Apikotoa Counselling Service is not an emergency service. If you are in crisis, please call 111 or contact a local crisis helpline.

How do I book a session, and what can I expect in my first appointment?

Booking a session is a simple and stress-free process. You can reach out by email or through the contact form on my website. Once you get in touch, I’ll guide you through the next steps, including scheduling and payment options.

Your first session is all about getting to know you and making you feel comfortable. There’s no pressure to share everything at once. We’ll talk about what brings you to counselling, what you hope to achieve, and I’ll explain how confidentiality works. It’s an opportunity for you to ask questions and determine if this feels like the right fit for you.

What worries or concerns do you think people have most often when they're thinking about reaching out for counselling, or about how it all works?

Many people feel nervous about reaching out for counselling, and that’s completely normal. Common concerns include:

“Will I be judged?” People often worry about being criticized or misunderstood. Counselling is a safe, non-judgmental space where your thoughts and feelings are respected.

“What if I don’t know what to say?” You don’t need to have everything figured out before starting. It’s okay to begin with small steps—your counsellor will guide the conversation.

“Is what I share confidential?” Yes. Confidentiality is a priority, and I’ll explain exactly how it works in our first session. The only exceptions are situations where safety is at risk.

“Will counselling really help me?” Many people wonder if counselling will make a difference. Counselling is a collaborative process, and together we’ll work toward your goals at your pace.

“How does online counselling work?” Some worry about technology or privacy. Sessions are held via secure video platforms, and I’ll provide clear instructions to make it easy and comfortable.

What are the most important practical things people need to know about your online sessions, like how they work, booking changes, or confidentiality?

Confidentiality
Your privacy is very important. Everything you share is confidential, except where there is a legal or safety requirement (such as risk of harm). I’ll explain confidentiality in detail during your first session.
